Stock prices were set to continue their rally Thursday as investors prepare for a new report that is expected to show unemployment claims fell for the third straight week. Claims are still at levels that indicate the jobs market is weak and rapid hiring is unlikely anytime soon. But investors have taken solace in modest improvements recently that suggest the economy will continue to grow slowly during the rest of the year. Traders concerned about the potential for the economy falling back into recession drove stocks lower throughout August.

BoE Retains Key Rate, GBP 200 Bln Bond Purchase

Prominent Human Rights Lawyer Held In Iran

A prominent Iranian human rights lawyer is being held in solitary confinement at Tehran's notorious Evin prison after she was arrested on security charges, according to her lawyer. Jafari said Sotoodeh called from Evin prison on Wednesday and said she was in "solitary confinement," and that the authorities had also seized personal computers and documents from her home and office.
